Joy Riding
Joy Riding
Joe started writing a bunch of songs. He asked Scott to play drums on them. Scott said "okay." Then nothing happened for probably a year and a half, but they sure talked about it a whole bunch. Then Joe and Scott finally got their act together and asked Kerry and John to be in the band, too. Kerry and John also said "okay." The four of them started writing songs together in December 2012 and continue to do so to this day. Joe used to be in Makeout Party and The Beatles. Scott used to be in Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start, Decathlete, and The Beatles. John used to be in Up Up Down Down and The Beatles, and is currently in It's a King Thing. Kerry used to be in Futureman, The Not Fur Longs, and The Beatles. Everyone lives in or close to Philadelphia, PA. "You're So Smart," the group's most recent LP, was released on Black Rd Records in June 2017
Spelling Reform
Philadelphia indie group Spelling Reform continues to evolve on its LP "No One’s Ever Changed," released in November 2016 on Black Rd Records. Featured in Consequence of Sound, American Songwriter and more, the record – with touches of indie rock, indie pop, folk and power pop — is anchored by singer/songwriter Dan Wisniewski’s feverous lyrics and urgent vocals, which have drawn comparisons to The Mountain Goats, Dan Bejar and Woody Allen (for real). Recorded in a single, donut-fueled weekend with producer and Hop Along guitarist Joe Reinhart at The Headroom in Philadelphia, "No One's Ever Changed" makes for a fascinating listen, with well-formed songs, energetic delivery and varied instrumentation. For fans of The Weakerthans and Pixies. The group is currently road testing new material for an LP release in 2018.
Pilkington is the sound of turn of the century rock and roll infused with dynamic female vocals and just a splash of chiptune. Driven by the dual threat of front woman and lead guitarist, Becca Todd, the band has been steadily gaining fans since their first two singles, "All Around the Neighborhood" and "Soft Flesh", were released in 2017. During that short period, the band has shared the stage with Middle Kids, Death By Unga Bunga, Tristen, Hey Marseilles, and Bad Bad Hats. The band is fresh out of the studio and set to release their first LP in early summer 2018.
Night Windows
Night Windows
Night Windows latest release, Home, was recorded in Hughes’ garage between tours (tours which included a stint at SXSW and a well received Daytrotter session) and produced by indie hero Fred Thomas. Two of the songs appearing on the release (Home and I Miss You & The Weekend) have been previously recorded and released by Hughes. The band has already wrestled command of these songs live, bringing them into a new light by adding energy and finesse. Thomas has his fingerprints all over them too; not only by adding vocals, playing guitars and synth, but writing his own parts and providing a sagely air to the band’s material. The result is the strongest effort yet by a band that has already produced a string of robust releases.
